Bratislava Sights, Sounds and Hotels
The charming main square is the centre of the Old Town. Frequent markets, gatherings, celebrations, executions and most significant events took place here from the 14th century. Old houses and palaces line the square presenting a delightful mix of architectural styles, such as Baroque, Rococo and a marvellously ornamental example of Art Nouveau. Most of the houses, however, are Gothic, and a number of them were built as defensive houses with towers before the fortification of the town. The sandstone Renaissance Maximilian´s Fountain, complete with sculpture portraying Emperor Maximilian II as the celebrated protector of towns, occupies the middle of the square. The Old Town Hall, founded during the 15th century when a number of bourgeois houses were merged together, presides over the square.
Bratislava's Main Square is a marvellously entertaining way to spend an afternoon in Bratislava. The best way to spend your nights will be in any of the fantastic Bratislava Hotels.
